Intro to Sewing: How to Use Your Sewing Machine - Starts May 12th
Early Bird - $199 | After 5/9 - $220
Come join us for a 3-week sewing series designed for absolute beginners, no prior experience needed.
In this hands-on course, you’ll learn the foundations of sewing on “Iron Matrons,” beautiful vintage Singer sewing machines from the 1930s–1960s (or you can bring your own machine!).
Each class is 3 hours long, and you’ll complete one project per session, building your skills step by step in a supportive, creative environment.
Schedule:
Tuesdays starting May 12
6:00 PM – 9:00 PM
(3-week series)
What You’ll Learn & Create
Week 1: Sewing Foundations
Learn how a sewing machine works, how to properly thread it, guide your stitching, and develop good sewing habits. You’ll apply these skills by creating a pillowcase with beautifully finished French seams.
Week 2: Functional Sewing
Build on your skills by making a practical apron with pockets. This session will focus on construction, consistency, and confidence.
Week 3: Finishing Techniques
Take your sewing to the next level by learning how to install a zipper as you create a lined zippered pouch, perfect for everyday use.
Instructor
This class is led by Jennifer Horton, an avid quilter and dedicated renovator of vintage sewing machines. Jennifer brings both technical expertise and a love for craftsmanship, making this a truly special learning experience.
What’s Included
All tools and equipment will be provided, including:
Vintage sewing machines (unless you bring your own, please specify in registration)
Ironing equipment
Scissors, rotary cutters, and self-healing mats
Thread, batting, and various sewing notions
What to Bring
Students will need to bring their own fabric. We recommend 100% cotton quilting fabric, which is easy to work with and widely available at fabric shops, which you can purchase from any fabric store, but we encourage you to shop local at Quilting Essentials & More in Warrenton.
Fabric Requirements:
Pillowcase
3/4 yard main fabric
1/4 yard cuff fabric
2” strip for decorative trim (optional)
Apron
1 yard fabric
Zippered Pouch
2 coordinating fat quarters (18” x 22”)
or1/2 yard of a single fabric
Most fabric shops will cut fabric by the yard or smaller increments (as little as 1/4 yard), and pre-cut “fat quarters” are commonly available.
———
This class is as much about slowing down and learning a timeless craft as it is about making beautiful, functional pieces. By the end of the series, you’ll leave with a strong foundation in sewing and the confidence to keep creating.
